Social and economic interest
The Chair of Gender Studies at the University of Valladolid was established in 2000, following its approval by the Governing Council on July 28th. Its members are mainly teachers at the Palencia, Segovia and Valladolid campuses, as well as a professor from the University of Murcia and several associate members who collaborate in the Chair's activities without belonging to the University.
Alicia Puleo, professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy, was the first director of the CEG. Since March 2011, the Chair has been directed by Mª Teresa Alario, Professor of History of Art at the La Yutera Campus, with Fátima Cruz Souza and later Angélica Velasco Sesma carrying out the tasks of Secretary throughout these years.
The creation of the CEG in the context of the University is justified because it allows it to carry out activities and research, teach and carry out activities related to gender studies and feminism in an interdisciplinary way, since its members belong to different areas of knowledge, departments and centers.
In relation to teaching, in addition to the conferences, meetings and congresses that have been held every year on different topics on the campuses of Palencia, Segovia and Valladolid, the CEG has taught the TPP Specialist Course in Equal Opportunity Agents, which was developed over nine editions with great success and financial support from the Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunity of the Regional Government of Castilla y León until the 2009-2010 academic year. Also with notable demand and good results, the Master's Degree in Gender Studies and Equality Policies was developed over three courses in collaboration with FORENCyL, which was taught online. In the 2017-2018 academic year, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education of Palencia, the TPP of Specialist in Gender Studies and Management of Equality Policies was launched with a blended learning character from which three editions have been developed until the 2019-2020 academic year. For the 2020-2021 academic year, a Verification Report has been prepared for the implementation of a Master's Degree in Feminist Studies and Management of Equality Policies, which has been approved by the University's Governing Council. It is expected to begin in the 2022-2023 academic year. The GEG collaborates with other entities and institutions, such as the City Council of Valladolid, with which it signed an agreement for the development of university extension activities (courses and conferences open to the public) throughout the year.
The GEG collaborates with other entities and institutions, such as the City Council of Valladolid, with which it signed an agreement for the development of university extension activities (courses and conferences open to citizens) throughout 2017 and 2018 with an endowment of 4,500 euros each year.It has also collaborated with Cadena SER of Palencia for two academic years, developing biographies of remarkable women in a program that was broadcast once a week.It has also collaborated with the Film Festival of Palencia in 2019 in the realization of an exhibition entitled Versionadas, and with the Platform for Women's Rights of Palencia with whom it collaborates in the annual conference on Cinema, women and human rights.
Throughout the different academic years, the CEG has also carried out outreach activities on the different campuses where it is represented, which vary according to the interests of the students and the studies taught there. To cite just a few examples, since the list would be very long if we were to mention all the activities carried out, the Palencia campus has held conferences such as Gender violence, a social issue, and Mujeres Geniales. On the Valladolid campus, a course on Gender Perspective in Health was organized and a panel was presented at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters on Gender Focus in Humanities Research. On the Segovia campus, conferences were held on Women and the new communication technologies: a new wage and violence gap?Entrepreneur, creative and cyber-bullying, or the Conference for reflection and awareness-raising on the role of advertising in the controversy over prostitution in public spaces.
From the point of view of research, the CEG has developed projects such as Gender Equality in the Culture of Sustainability: values and good practices for solidarity development, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and whose principal investigator was Professor Alicia Puleo
With regard to the objective of creating a documentation center on gender issues, the Chair of Gender Studies currently has a resource center on the campus of Palencia (Faculty of Education) and a specific collection on women and gender studies in the library of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of Valladolid. Both have been implemented as a result of acquisitions in the context of the various projects in which the CEG has participated.
In recognition of CEG's work and social commitment, it has received two awards:
