Description

We have developed a device for measuring the audio frequency (from 20Hz to 20kHz) that crosses wood structural elements, mostly beams, together with the measuring procedure to obtain a complete analysis of the main frequencies that cross simultaneously the element. Ultimately, gathered data will allow to characterize the material and spotting the possible defects and internal damages. This device provides a useful tool for construction uses regarding cultural heritage and rehabilitation, refurbishment and maintenance of wooden structure buildings, as historical heritage preservation is key in the cultural lives of modern societies. This method provides an innovative non-invasive technique which is compatible with the heritage values, complying with security and durability requirements.

Advantages:

The development of non-destructive techniques for physical-mechanical characterization, and especially ultrasonic waves measurement in wood, goes back to the middle of last century. Its use is increasingly common. Its applicability lies in the strong relationship existing between the material's elastomechanical properties, especially its elastic modulus, and the dynamic constant (C11) obtained from the velocity of propagation of sonic and/or ultrasonic energy. Our device seeks for innnovating in preventive conservation, a field including actions related to environmental control of cultural heritage and its continuous, regular and habitual maintenance, as stated in the COTEC Report on Innovation in the Historical Heritage sector (Informe COTEC de innovación en el sector del Patrimonio Histórico, pp. 86-87). Devices available in today's market are quite expensive, what reduces its possibility of being used extensively. This measuring device would facilitate the regular conduction of this type of tests.
