Description

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) applied to domotic control. A BCI system is a communication system which monitorizes brain activity and translates specific features of the reflected signals by the user in command's intentions. BCI application will be based on sensorimotor rhythms, more specifically rhytms µ (8-12 Hz) and β (16-24 Hz). The following methods for feature extraction will be studies with the aim of properly identifying the user’s intentions: Spactral analysis based on Fourier Transform (FT), Autoregressive Models (AR), time-frequency analysis based on Wavelet Transform (WT), Matched Filtering (MF), Comon Spatial Patterns (CSP), non-lineal methods. Within this approach, the following applications are developed: BCI domotic application based on P300 evocated potentials, which allows dependent persons to control up to 8 domotic and electronic devices that can be found in any home (lighting, TV, DVD, phone, multimedia hard disk, stereo, heating and fan) with up to 115 control commands. Platform of cognitive training intended for the elderly using BCI based on sensorimotor rhythms to improve attention, visual perception and immediate memory.

Development status:

In prototype phase

Intellectual Property Rights:

Registro propiedad Intelectual: DOMO_BCI

Differentiation in the market:

Novelty

Applicability of technology:

Yes

Companies and markets:

Public health and medical care services. Telecare.

Advantages:

BCI systems are mainly intended for the benefit of disabled people and the improvement of the services provided by their caretakers. In this way, independence and autonomy in daily tasks would increase, as well as the restoration of lost functions.

Additional Information:

“Proyecto CERO en envejecimiento” is framed in this line of work and has been financed by the General Foundation CSIC and Obra Social La Caixa and CSIC (Spanish National Research Council). The developed applications are being evaluated by real final users (30 subjects with severe disability) from the State Center of Reference of Disability and Dependence of San Andrés de Rabanedo (León). 25 subjects with a precision higher than 85%.
