Description

Hydrocephaly is characterized by clinical symptoms, ventriculomegaly and disturbances in the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Infusion tests are hydrodynamic studies performed to analyze CSF dynamics in patients exhibiting hydrocephaly characteristics. In those tests, the patient's intracranial pressure (ICP) is raised in a controlled way and the resulting pressure is monitored. In patients suffering from hydrocephaly, these tests help to determine if a shunt surgical implantation is necessary, although it has also proven to be useful for the study of brain hemodynamics. In the Biomedical Engineering Group (GIB in its Spanish acronym), ICP signals collected during infusion tests are analyzed for the following purposes: To study the spectral and non-linear characteristics of the ICP signal throughout the infusion test. To determine if the automatic analysis of these signals allows to predict the patients' response to shunt implantation.
