Description

OBJECTIVES

The Recognized Research Group on Pharmacogenetics, Cancer Genetics, Genetic Polymorphisms and Pharmacoepidemiology is a multidisciplinary group formed by researchers in the areas of biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, nursing and psychiatry, working for the University of Valladolid and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in research centers such as the Center for Drug Safety Studies (CESME) and the Institute of Biology and Molecular Genetics (IBGM). The group has two defined aspects, on the one hand, the pharmacoepidemiological aspect and, on the other, the genetic aspect and, more specifically, cancer genetics and applied genetic markers. Both converge in pharmacogenetics and in the identification of genetic polymorphisms related to drug responses and predisposition to the development of cancer and other pathologies.
With this profile, the main objectives of the group are:
  • Investigate the way in which drugs are used, as well as their effects and safety in human populations.
  • To develop techniques for the detection of mutations and genetic polymorphisms.
  • Analysis of the influence of genetic polymorphisms and variants on responses to drugs and on the risk of predisposition to cancer.
  • Identification of biomarkers and tools to predict drug response.
  • To identify biomarkers and tools that allow the risk of development of chronic pathologies and aging.
  • To study the impact of DNA variants in the splicing of breast cancer susceptibility genes.

As transversal objectives, the group aims to:
  • Encourage participation in Spanish and international research projects.
  • Encourage collaboration with universities in other countries.
  • To train graduate students.
  • Encourage research among undergraduate students.
  • To participate in outreach activities related to the research areas of the group.
  • To ensure healthy living and promote wellness at all ages, in line with Goal 3 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Research Lines

  • Use of drugs acting on the Central Nervous System.
  • Weight gain induced by antipsychotic drugs, identification of genetic polymorphisms.
  • Clinical, genetic and pharmacological factors affecting the response to opioids.
  • Optimization of pharmacological treatment in polymedicated elderly and application of assessment instruments in therapeutic adherence.
  • Optimization of pharmacological treatment and therapeutic adherence in subjects treated with antipsychotics.
  • Safety of hydroxychloroquine and its interactions in the treatment of Covid-19.
  • Study of the effect of biomarkers in fibromyalgia.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and cardiovascular risk.
  • Biomarkers applied in COPD and tobacco smoking
  • Biomarkers applied in renal disease
  • Biomarkers applied in aging, health status and quality of life
  • Blood biomarkers for frailty and sarcopenia
  • Antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage in clinical research
  • Physical activity, diet and health in the general population
  • Correlation between aberrant splicing and susceptibility to breast cancer and other hereditary diseases.
