  • CenterInstitute of Applied Ophthalmobiology (IOBA)
  • DepartmentSurgery, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology and Physiotherapy
  • Investigation GroupOcular Surface Research Group (GSO)

Description

PURPOSE OF THE GROUP. Increase the efficiency of the current systems used in the reconstruction of the ocular surface inflammation (allergy, dry eye and others), both with medical means (new drugs, nanotechnology) and surgical means (tissue engineering).
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
1. Increase the effectiveness of current ocular surface transplants that have to be performed to restore corneal blindness.
2. Search for an alternative source of stem cells from the ocular surface different from the natural one (limbus), which avoids having to intervene in the contralateral healthy eye or having to obtain material from a histocompatible relative or cadaver, both cases requiring sustained systemic immunosuppression.
3. Find new therapeutic alternatives for chronic and serious inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface, specifically Allergies and Dry Eye Syndromes.
4. Application of nanotechnology to the development of controlled drug release systems for the recovery of ocular surface function.

Advantages:

The main objectives pursued by the GSO are:
  • Investigation into pathogenic inflammatory mechanisms on the ocular surface, through preclinical and clinical studies.
  • Identification and validation of biomarkers (cellular and molecular ones) of inflammatory ocular surface activity with the aim of improving the access to new drugs.
  • Increase in the cell therapy effectiveness in the treatment of ocular surface failure due to limbic insufficiency that causes corneal blindness.
  • Application of nanotechnology to the development of controlled drug delivery systems for the functional recovery of the ocular surface.
  • Execution of clinical trials that investigate the biological and molecular bases of the ocular surface in order to improve the treatments available to patients.

Additional Information:

The GSO belongs to several regional, national and international orgnizations:
  • Recognized Research Group (GIR) of the University of Valladolid
  • Consolidated Research Units (UIC) of the Junta de Castilla y Léon.
  • Member of the Network Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy of Castilla y León (Castilla y León Board, Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII))
  • Belongs to the Thematic Network of Cooperative Health Research (RETICS), specifically to the Cell Therapy Network (TerCel Network) and the Eye Pathology Network (OftaRed), ISCIII.
  • Belongs to the Spanish Nanomedicine Platform (NanomedSpain)
  • Integral Group of the Biomedical Network Research Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN)
  • Belongs to the Cluster of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences (Cluster4eye).
The GSO participates in numerous national and international projects, among which include:
