Description
The Ocular Pathological Anatomy Laboratory of Valladolid’s University Institute of Applied Ophthalmology (IOBA) is a laboratory specialized in the study and diagnosis of samples belonging to eyeballs, orbit and ocular appendages. Diagnostic services: Provision of personnel specialized in the processing, interpretation and diagnosis of ocular samples. Implementation of special techniques, immunohistochemistry studies, immunofluorescence or molecular biology studies. Conjunctiva: Routine optical microscopy in histological preparations with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain, in addition to special techniques, if necessary, with a detailed description of the histological findings. Immunofluorescence studies on unfixed connective tissue to rule out autoimmune processes such as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. Cornea: Routine optical microscopy in histological preparations with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain with a detailed description of the histological findings. Special techniques for the study of degeneration and corneal dystrophies, as well as for the detection of microorganisms. Eyeball (enucleation and evisceration): Carrying out a detailed macroscopic examination with transillumination of the eyeball to locate the tumor and choose the most appropriate slice plane. Identification and evaluation of tumor invasion. Orbit and ocular appendages (orbital pathology, eyelid and tear gland): Carrying out a thorough macroscopic examination of the samples. Identification and evaluation of the neoplastic invasion degree. Detailed description of the histological findings. Performance of immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology techniques. Cytology: Vitreous humor and aqueous humor: Cytological study by cytocentrifugation and cell block production. Conjunctival impression cytology: As an aid in the diagnosis and management of dry eye syndrome, Sjögren's syndrome and allergic pathology. Second diagnostic opinion. Study of cases of consultation sent from other centers. Research: Material available in our archive (paraffin blocks and histological preparations) for teaching and research activities, which means more than 7,000 stored samples (4,975 computerized samples). Processing and histological evaluation of samples corresponding to research projects, both human and experimental animals. Taking into account current legislation, the University Institute of Applied Ophthalmology (IOBA) has developed and applies a management procedure for biological samples of human origin for biomedical research purposes.Other information
