Description

On February 28, 1962, the Chair of History and Aesthetics of Cinematography was created at the University of Valladolid, attached to the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters by an Order of the then Ministry of National Education (BOE. of June 9, 1962). 1962). Being the oldest film-related institution in the city of Valladolid, along with the Valladolid International Film Week (SEMINCI).

It is the first Chair of its kind created in Spain, and the second in Europe, behind the Chair of History and Theory of Cinema at the Institute of Art History of the University of Pisa established in 1959, under the auspices of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematography.

At that time, the functions assigned to the Chair were literally: “promote the study and knowledge of cinematography, organize teaching and cinematographic culture courses, disseminate knowledge of cinematographic productions, cooperate in the organization and development of the SEMINCI - then "International Week of Religious Cinema and Human Values" - and in the International Cinema Conversations, as well as any other activity that tends to disseminate knowledge of cinematography..., singularly in its historical aspects and as an art of expression ”.

Starting in 2011, Javier Castán Lanaspa, professor of History of Ancient and Medieval Art, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, began as director.

After experiencing a series of natural periods of boom and recession, the Chair is now experiencing a period of stabilization and renewal, in which a series of changes have been carried out to carry out continuous activity throughout the year. Likewise, the Cinematography Course continued to be held during the month of August until, in 2020, it could not be carried out due to the confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was in August 2023, when the expected and successful course screenings were resumed, while the new course configuration was rethought.

In any case, the Valladolid Cinematography Chair has celebrated 61 years of existence in 2023, with total dynamism in its future projects and betting on supporting cinema, with special emphasis and interest in Spanish cinema.
