The purpose of the SMART Global Ecosystems Chair is the creation of a public university structure with private participation aimed at promoting research and training in the area of artificial intelligence and data science of the natural environment to promote sustainability.

The Chair will apply its efforts primarily to the development of innovation projects in data science and artificial intelligence for ecosystem management, with international projection and the increase of the practical application of the research projects carried out.

Through the combination of statistics and computer science, data science has become the fundamental tool for extracting knowledge from complex data. Both data science and artificial intelligence have a long history in the study, analysis and management of ecosystems. However, to date there are few initiatives for the development of these aspects applied to ecosystems where, nevertheless, there is an abundance of data with which new knowledge and technological developments could be generated.

Ecosystems are under great pressure due to global change, including climate change and socioeconomic change, which brings with it a crisis in biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services. By developing methods for monitoring, analysis and management of ecosystems based on data science and artificial intelligence, we aim to ensure Sustainability, Mitigation, Adaptation, Resilience to global change and Trade-offs of ecosystem services (SMART) globally.
