Description

Design, implementation and assessment of a GPS guidance system for agricultural tractors, using augmented reality technology. Commercial tractor guidance systems offer the farmer information to make tractor driving along the plot easier. This information usually includes a map of the treated areas referenced to the tractor’s position. The tractor driver must mentally associate said map with the plot’s areas. We offer a developed guidance system using augmented reality technology which enables the driver to view the plot treated areas in a different color through a glasses-like monitor.

Differentiation in the market:

Novelty

Applicability of technology:

Yes

Companies and markets:

Agricultural / production sector.

Advantages:

The proposed guidance system uses augmented reality technology to allow the tractor driver to view the plot treated areas in a different color and to optimize the production yield by optimally distributing the seeds/fertilizer.

Additional Information:

This project was awarded the 1st prize in the 2009 Premios Fundación 3M a la Innovación (innovation award given by Fundación 3M) in the field of INDUSTRY. The related article includes the description of the hardware and software systems, a selection of images viewed by the tractor in real system tests, and a description predicting that the evolution of agriculture guidance will imply the use of augmented reality in monitoring and guidance systems.
