Description

Development of natural strategies for revegetation and forest expansion.

To study the influence of the bushes on the restoration of woody trees, in representative areas of Castilla y León with possible water stress due to their degree of alteration by the man (low capacity for moisture retention of the mining substrates), continuing with the experiments of manipulation initiated in 2010 and complete them with the study of the most influential abiotic (microclimate, soil) and biotic factors (herbivory by ungulates and small rodents), as well as with the monitoring of the physiological behavior of plants (stomatal conductance, etc.) . Also, it is intended to assess the influence of the forest-mine edge shape (two patches of vegetation with strong contrast) on the intensity and distance of the colonization of woody species (shrubs and trees) and, with it, on the natural expansion of the forest from the edge, as well as completing the characterization of the most favorable microsites for the establishment of oaks.
This is intended to obtain interesting theoretical results in fields where ecological information is still scarce (woody-woody interactions), as well as practical results to improve reforestation with Quercines in areas with water stress. The interest is even greater if one takes into account that, on the one hand, Castilla y León is considered one of the main areas for the supply of biomass for renewable energy purposes, and, on the other, the guidelines on climate change included in the Research and Innovation Framework Program 2014-2020.
