Description

OBJECTIVES
Physical exercise has been reported to be one of the means to modulate aging. Sarcopenia is a physiological condition that accompanies aging. Sarcopenia is the loss of strength and muscle mass caused by the progressive deterioration caused by aging, which is also accompanied by the progressive loss of physical and cognitive abilities. Due to the loss of muscle mass, these factors cause pathophysiological changes at the neuromuscular and tendon level with an increased risk of suffering from chronic diseases.

The purpose of this GIR is to advance the understanding of therapeutic strategies to modulate the situation based on pharmacological, nutritional and physical exercise applications.
As a general objective, we propose to lay the foundations by which the regular practice of physical activity together with an adequate diet and healthy lifestyle habits, provide a successful aging situation and contribute to reversing or attenuating the problems associated with aging.

As specific objectives:
  • Contribute to scientific development and open new horizons in the field of sarcopenia and aging, influencing the effect of exercise and dietary supplements in their modulation.
  • To evaluate the participation of the consumption of the Mediterranean diet on the production of free radicals, the level of antioxidant defenses, oxidative and nitrosative damage, the production of reactive oxygen species, the dynamics of biogenesis, remodeling, repair and mitochondrial energy efficiency, the myokine secretion, the functionality of cells of the immune system, and the degree of chronic inflammation in response to intense exercise in elderly athletes and age-matched controls.
  • Assess the accumulation and clearance of ammonia after exercise, under normal conditions and after dietary manipulation, and study the elimination of excess nitrogen from the energy use of proteins and the synthesis of arginine.
