Description
The research line of this official research group (GIR in its Spanish acronym) is based on the study of groups and collective lifestyles. Within it, two main aspects are analized. On the one hand, informal sociability or collective action is studied, that is to say, all things related to the exercise of the right of assembly, meaning public meetings, protests, demonstrations, etc. The second aspect of this research line is formal sociability or associationism, focused on the study of established groups: associations with registered offices, statutes or rules. Cronologically, the GIR covers all sociability developed in the Spanish region of Castile from 1931 to 1975, a period where democratic freedoms were an exception, unlike other European countries. Along the 20th century, the rights of assembly and association could barely be exerted in Spain. Therefore, the research group studies from a significant perspective the country's problems to achieve these rights, which are essential to modern life. The group coordinated by Elena Maza argues that sociability must be cross-cutting and interdisciplinary. Therefore, it is presented as a meeting point for different social sciences.Other information

GIR's goals are: a) To find all source documents available for the study of Castilian sociability during the Spanish Second Republic, Civil War and Francoism. Once found, they will be put through critical review and balanced assessment. b) To create a database (File Maker) containing in computerized records as detailed as possible all associations registered in Castilla y León between 1931 and 1975 and their history (creation, rules, actual activity, fusions, banning, dissolution). c) To suggest a new typological and interpretative approach to association network, one that rationalizes the fragmentation reflected in the civil administration's registers and other official records. d) To weight the associative gap of each region's province in rural, urban and capital areas, its main aspects, the reasons for these priorities and the meaning of the transformation or continuity signs that those patterns show over the years.
