Description
Research in Complex Social Systems requires an integrative approach to Engineering, Social Sciences and Management. Agent-based modeling and agent-based social simulation provide the framework we have adopted for dealing with complex systems. Our main interests are: industrial organization: study of strategic interactions of companies or competing/cooperating agents in different market and regulatory frameworks. This line can provide decision support on issues such as pricing, advertising, product lines, target quality, competitor response, alliances or market regulation. These studies are often conducted by combining (agent-based) simulation with (evolutionary) game theory and network theory. Complex Business Systems: Governance. Organizational learning and change. Testing the politics and dynamics of the industry. Artificial Economics: Market institutions. Auctions. Artificial Intelligence: Learning algorithms.Other information

Related projects: CivPro (Regional Strategies for Disaster Prevention). In recent years, many European regions have suffered from natural and man-made disasters, such as forest fires, floods and droughts. Its devastating effects on citizens' lives, the environment and the economy have led European, national and regional civil protection authorities to strongly focus on response and recovery measures. However, there is also the need for more actions and efforts in disaster prevention strategies. The CivPro project, which brings together 12 partners from 11 EU countries, has been designed to respond to this need. The overall objective is twofold. First of all, it aims to improve the coordination and effectiveness of regional policies in disaster prevention and the mitigation of their consequences. Secondly, the association wishes to further develop tools and establish modalities to strengthen the link between disaster prevention and crisis management. Distributed control of workshop manufacturing systems through multi-agent systems. In this project, we address the plant control problem in workshop manufacturing systems based on multi-agent systems. The application of these techniques to production management will produce an important methodological breakthrough that will provide intelligent decision support systems. Thus, modern organizations will be able to take advantage of the benefits of current information technologies and improve the performance of business organizations. SiCoSSys (agent-based tools for the simulation of complex social systems). The project’s objective is to provide a solid methodological framework for the treatment of complexity by politicians and social scientists, with an updated theoretical body of knowledge, a set of tools that allow the simulation of scenarios, and a collection of case studies to guide and demonstrate the applicability of the framework. This framework will be based on modeling and simulation methods and tools oriented to agents. Available equipment: the Scientific Research and Technological Development building facilities at the Miguel Delibes Campus: INSISOC’s Computer Laboratory. Seminars and conference rooms. Recording and streaming studio. Linux server. Computer simulation software: Netlogo, among others. INSISOC is an Excellence Research Group of Castilla y León (GREX 251, 2004), whose members are located at the University of Valladolid and the University of Burgos (Spain).
