The group aims to fill a gap in the studies of the medieval world by seeking close collaboration between Greek and Latin philologists to analyze the transmission and reception of texts both from Classical Antiquity and written during the millennium after the beginning of the Modern Age.

It is based on the idea that absolute originality does not exist in written production and, therefore, priority must be given to the processes of rewriting and readapting the sources. It starts from a model of philological analysis, which avoids both the abuses of the mechanistic Quellenforschung of historiography (see J. Signes Codoñer - I. Pérez Martín, eds., Textual Transmission in Byzantium: between Textual Criticism and Quellenforschung, Turnhout, Brepols 2014) as the romantic approaches to the literary fact as the fruit of the creative genius characteristic of a certain literary criticism. The idea is to study these processes of constant revision and updating of texts through paradigmatic works that allow establishing guidelines and rewriting patterns in historical, scientific, philosophical, poetic and legal texts and can enlighten both historians and philologists about the nature of medieval written production.

Aware of the relative marginality that the medieval world has in our academic field, this group tries to claim it as the key to understanding modernity through its literature. Special interest will be given to the contact between Greek and Latin literature in the Middle Ages, as well as between both and other cultural spheres, so that, once the GIR is admitted, it will seek to expand its contacts to disciplines such as Arabism and Slavistics.
