Description

PURPOSE

The aim of the Research Group on New Trends in Communication (NUTECO) is to study in depth the new trends in communication in the present situation of digital convergence, in the face of the challenges of change and social innovation. In particular, the group will focus on the analysis of ‘infotainment’ and ‘spectacularisation’, considered to be the dominant phenomena in public communication today. Within this field of study, the aim is to pay special attention to the influence of these trends in political and social communication that concern an improvement in the quality of democracy, based on the principles of information transparency, citizen participation and collaboration of social agents in decision-making, in whose processes communication plays a fundamental role.

OBJECTIVES

-. To constitute itself as a permanent observatory of the mutations in current public communication in the new digital environment.

-. To carry out the analysis from both quantitative and qualitative parameters of the journalistic manifestations inscribed in the dominant phenomena of current public communication.

-. Analyse how the new forms of communication affect the way journalism is done in its different phases: the discourse of sources, the privileged news values, the hierarchisation of information, the formats selected, the approach and the presentation of the news.

-. Analysis of the audiences of products within the ‘infotainment’ genre in order to extract their sociological characteristics and their consumption of the media.

-. Analyse the impact and repercussions on public opinion of the development of these new trends that are imposing themselves on current public communication and how they affect knowledge of the environment, the symbolic construction of reality and the democratic culture of Western societies.
