Description

AprendeMat: Android app based on the Singapore model for learning and assessing mathematical competencies in primary school. Android application for teaching math following the Singapore teaching model. An exercise and user interface generator engine is developed. In addition, student management is implemented. The generator engine is developed in Java using NetBeans IDE 7.2. This engine is executed in a terminal and the data of the new exercise to be built is requested. The.xml file containing the user interface and a .java file containing the basic methods for the operation of the exercise are generated. It may be necessary to make small changes to the.xml but it is not necessary to create the entire structure. With the generator engine we make sure to create new exercises with minimal additional implementation costs. With this, we seek to minimize the time needed to add or modify exercises in the app for proper maintenance. The modeling has been done in UML 2.0. notation. Analysis and design sequence diagrams, domain models and class descriptions have been made following this notation. The app is designed following the Layout View Model pattern. Personal data of the students and the results obtained in the exercises are stored in a SQLite database. The app allows to send the record with the results of all the students. To do this, it generates a file in .xls format. The application delegates the sending of the file to the Android system using the sending methods available on the device.

Companies and markets:

The application would be made available for download on Google Play and the recipients are both individuals and schools. Initially, Spanish and English have been included, but the app has multi-language support to allow market expansions to other countries.

Advantages:

It is very easy to find applications in Google Play that are oriented towards learning math. Segmented by age or subject, hundreds of small apps affirm in their description that they can be used to acquire the concepts that are studied in them. As far as the authors of this project have been able to see, in addition to covering small age groups and not covering the whole of primary education, none of these statements are validated in terms of their effectiveness for learning, nor in terms of the feedback they provide to the parent or teacher on the real evolution of the student. Moreover, these apps are oriented towards a domestic use, overlooking the fact that tablet penetration in schools is increasing. This proposal consists of validating each and every one of the levels implemented, both in the content acquisition phases (assessing the acquisition of a new concept through the app) and in the reinforcement phases (assessing the persistence of learning). Furthermore, since the app is intended to be used at homes and at schools alike, reports generated by the app will be validated with teachers to guarantee that the most adequate information is given and in the best format. The most innovative aspects of the proposal are: 1. The teaching method followed with the selection of the Singapore teaching method. 2. The use of the app in schools: By saving the results of the exercises in a record, the teacher can know which types of exercises are more difficult to perform, which are less difficult, etc. 3. Random generation of exercises. 4. In addition to the the instructions in text format, verbal instructions (audio) are added at the initial levels, when reading is not yet consolidated and is not comprehensible.
